CHPT3 MSR 1.81 Base Layer - Green

Our famously lightweight, high-wicking base layer, telling the second half of the story of Milan Sanremo.

The first Monument of the year, Milano-Sanremo is such a journey. A 300km point to point race with 270km of ever-building tension for what seems like 30km of real racing, it has a character all of its own: a strong, slightly mad, identity. It feels like winter when congregating at the start line among the early morning shadows of the grey, cold and often damp capital city of Lombardy. This all changes when cresting the Turchino Pass at the halfway point, the summit is passed via a tunnel whose entrance is painted with black and white chevrons, signifying to those in the know, the end of the beginning. The exit of the tunnel and descent to the coast becomes an explosion of life and colour. It feels like a different world, a different race begins, and with it a new season, winter is finally over and for this reason, we call it La Classicissima di Primavera.

INTO THE LIGHT
Worn beneath the dark MSR Jersey, the colours pop from beneath, representing the second, vibrant half of Milan Sanremo. The Mediterranean coastal road that leads to Sanremo being a welcome contrast to the grey industrial city where it starts. We thought of this design as being much like the reveal in a suit, where the interior lining would be in stark contrast to the conservative exterior.

PERFORMANCE
Originally used by Castelli to make a super lightweight climber’s jersey for the Tour de France, the fabric of our base layers is extremely lightweight and has superb wicking properties. The issue encountered when used for a jersey was longevity, often the hems would become unstitched as the fabric was so lightweight that it couldn’t hold the stitching adequately. The solution we've provided to this has been to create ‘false’ hems, instead of folding over the edge of the material and sewing it down there are additional panels of material sewn on with double stitching where the fold of the hem would normally be. Unfathomably lightweight and created to last - an essential.
